Someone Has to Go First

Sometimes love does not end

because two hearts

stopped caring.

Sometimes it simply waits

behind two closed doors,

each hoping

the other will knock first.

Pride calls itself strength.

Silence pretends to be peace.

And slowly,

two people who once knew

everything about each other

learn how to become strangers.

All because neither could say,

I was wrong.

I hurt you.

I miss us.

There is courage

in being the first to soften.

In laying down the armour

without knowing

if the other person will too.

An apology cannot undo yesterday.

But sometimes

three honest words,

I am sorry,

can build a small bridge

across years of distance.

And perhaps love

was never asking us

to decide who should go first.

Only whether what remains

between two hearts

is precious enough

for someone

to finally begin.
