The Pentagon denies that any military dogs were left behind
in Afghanistan. But in 1975, the Republican administration of Gerald
Ford left behind many dogs.
In return for unconditional
love and loyalty, nearly all of the
4000 German Shepherds who had served
as sentries, scouts, attack dogs, mine sniffers,
finders of the dead and wounded,
and lie detectors,
were defined at the end of the war
as 'excess equipment. They were forcibly
separated by senior officers from soldiers who held a mutual
love relationship with them, and turned
over to the South Vietnamese Army. Many
were killed and eaten.
