In my city I know only 2 of the Vietnamese children injured by US bombs... who came to America and grew up.
One recently gave birth though wheelchair ridden and without legs all her life...
a triumph which brought tears to the eyes of those who
know her.
The 2nd had 1/3 of her jaw blown off and has been trapped in
waitress jobs. I have not asked if she has been able to find
a loving partner.
The third I have not met but listened to on Fresh Air. Her
name is Kim Phuc.
She is the little Vietnamese girl whose clothes were burned
off her body by napalm when she was 9 years old, ran until
pain and thirst stopped her. When she stopped a kind American
soldier poured water on her burns, but the steam only cooked
them further. In the pain, she lost consciousness. She had 14 months in the hospital and 17 operations, with burns over 35% of her body.
