Christiaan Barnard was asked by Dick Cavett if he was still transplanting hearts from monkeys to human beings. Barnard said that he had not since an incident which had occurred with a recent transplant. He went to the cage to get the chimp
and 2 chimps clung together. The scientists decided on one, who held himself screching to the cage wire, with his friend
holding onto him for protection. After a struggle, the doctors
pulled him away forcibly and took him to have his heart cut out. His chimp friend kept reliving the horror and cried for
many weeks. Dick Cavett asked Dr Barnard if he could tell
the audience that the famous scientist had tears in his eyes. Barnard said that he would never again sacrifice a monkey
life for a transplant.
