MUSIC

The sun strikes the icicle wands and they flow into flowers.
The sun sparks the icicle batons
making the music of melting asterisking them with miracle
drops
*
The applause for Pavarotti.. is as beautiful as his voice..
for it is the sound of many hearts beating as one  each sending love
through his hands.
*
The enraptured woodpecker raps his rhapsodies, in the apple trees and
not the bush of raspberries
*
Like bells on a sleigh harness are pepper seeds strung
in the inner chambers of the belltower.
*
The birds have retired for the evening
but on goes the frog chorus played tirelessly for us
*
The ornithologist described the lark's 'plain appearance'. It was not
the fickle eyes but the ears of all... waiting for her song.
*

SONG BORN OF SILENCE

When the night is most
still
then the nightingale's trill
spontaneously spills

(to C Seikel)

ART

As a youth he read only poetry, a bee supping only on
nectar, an angel sipping ambrosia.
*
The artist paints the lily.. water colors dry on the canvas
.. but the lilyroots remain wet
*
The present's fleecy cloud wrapping is removed revealing
the jewel Sun streaming His own ribbons.
*
Hexagonal are honeycombs and snowflakes
and the columns in the Giant's Causeway that basalt makes
and round Saturn's north pole it is not his rings
but a sixpointed hexagon which does Jupiter brake
*
April south wind stirs October leaves of red into a mobile
with no visible threads
*
Unlike a freshman's trunk, overpacked, clothes spilling out,
the epigrams of Gore Vidal... have a world in few words.
*
Poets you love are rungs on a ladder...
for your morning glory poems they become a lattice

******
The lark is to Julie Andrews, beautiful in all ways

PAUL ROBESON

The racist mob
beat the
throngs
gathered for the song
of Paul Robeson

The whitebodied unconscious
not recognizing God
when He came
with His black robes on.

MARY MARTIN AND EZIO PINZA

So many beautiful notes
have left your throats
.. and on the galaxy's ethers
now they float

yet we grieve that
though your music
needs no throat
one enchanted evening
your spirits left
us for God...
shedding your body coats

HITLER'S CONCERT

If Hitler heard concerts
and then waged war
the music pacific
was not with message
sufficiently specific

If a bombdropper writes poems
of October leaves amber
1 room in his cerebrum
speaks not to another
brain chamber

THE SOUNDS OF MANY WATERS II

Sometimes water takes a vow of silence.....
snowfall in a pinewoods....
morning mist upcurling from a river..
cloud flotillas... water spun into international relief ships....
the Mississippi's power as it nears the sea

Sometimes it sings
waves against the rocks crashing ..
waves against the pier slapping
violent noise which brings ears peace..
snowmelt brooks gurgling in the meadows..
almost soundless raindrops' fall in a pool making circles..
the waterfall's cascading roar...
the drip drip drip of leaves after a storm

GIVING ALL

When passing song
through a willpowered
throat
in heartburst
her soul gives all
we are chilled
,,,,,, tears do fall

(to Barbra Streisand)

NOT DISCORDANT

The frog croaks
The raindrops splash softly
The woodpecker chisels
The lark sings
.. in perfect harmony
the symphony of God

LARKSPUR

O the delphinium
.. petaled oracle of Delphi
.. its sweet fortune unfolds..
this larkspur whose beauty
to song the lark spurs
.. to herself.. the bee stirs

CAVE CARVINGS

Some carve caves
Others notch naves
but only God etches
in ethers
Only God's own
walk the waves

FOUR UNIVERSITIES WHICH
DO CRICKET RESEARCH

They stop the music
of fall.. as much
as Jack Frost.

They still the crickets'
violins
Angels stop their
violence.

Guardian cricketeers
stop the crickets' tears.

MUSIC BEYOND HUMAN EARS

Twilight
Violet light
Stars one by one
   appear
on the stage of night
  They twinkle.
*
  *
asterisking infinite
love
.. semaphores of delight

JOHN DENVER

as waves rise
to grasp the full moon
does the audience
cling to his music

SHANTI

Shanti
Shanti
Shanti
becomes Shantish
.. Ishwara
God of Peace

(Shanti is Sanskrit
for peace.. Ishwar
is Sanskrit for God,
sometimes for the 3rd
person of the Trinity)

SWAMI BANANANANDA

Swami Bananananda
is always
listening to the music
of the sun weaving
gold in the trees

VOLCANOS OF CREATION

The artisan busily chipping away
at his "Be Kind" sculpture..
is angered by the interruption
as a stranger knocks on his door..
but only momentarily..
and laughs at himself

BROOKSONG

The winter brook..
sang not.. stopped
moving.. and froze
but now she babbles
and bubbles
and sings and flows

MANGO

The sun and tree did tango.
The result was saffron mangos.

SUMMONING NOTES

The violin
of Yehudi Menuhin
Krishna's flute
Orpheus' lyre..
they
call us away
from earthly liars.
Unlike
The pipes of Pied Piper
The pipes of Pan
they take us beyond
the rainbow's span.

(sparked by a poem
about Orpheys by
Sai Grafio)

BLUEBONNET

Bursting blooms of bluebonnet
to the sun sing silent sonnets
A beetlebored bamboo flute..
Yonder wind plays upon it

PEACE RHYTHMS

Slow falling big wet flakes of snow
Chimney smoke in the valley lazily rising to the stars
The fog rolling in above the tide rolling in
Waves' omkar
The frogs' croaks   The woodpecker's soft drill
Slow moving clouds
They catch us and move us in their rhythms

WILLOW HARPS

Though they hung their harps
upon the willows
it was the will of the wind
that blowing through
their fronds
he make harps of the willows.

FROG OMKAR

Behind the cricket orchestra
strings, was the omkar
of the river frogs.

PAVAROTTI

Pavarottia's voice left its cage throat
Never again confined will be its notes.
Pavarotti's soul left his body glove
the lover of all... is one with Love

SONG OF GOD

birds perch unharmed on
the spaces between the wire's barbs
.. they fly over boundaries without
passports
they sing before dawn yet
no one arrests them
they obey no traffic lights
they carry no money

CRICKET VIOLINS

The crickets' violin song
is a fall call
to remind us all
that the God of All
indwells the small

BATON ROUGE WAND

The sun has many wands
but it is with his
baton rouge that he
the conductor calls forth
the music of the crimson
carnation, the scarlet
pimpernel, the red rose.

ATTRIBUTES OF POETRY

Attributes of poetry:
rhythm,
rhyme, alliteration
join brevity.. or distillation.
Word pictures as specific description..
metaphor and simile..
or synecdoche. But not 1 of
them is essential in a poem.

ASIAN INDIANS IN VANCOUVER

Asian Indian women in Vancouver
saris concealed
   in drab coats...
rainbows beneath the clouds
.. music boxes unopened

CLOTHES DANCE

Clothes dance in the wind
on the outside line,
ghosts from a burlesque hall.

VAN GOGH

Every star you paint
  has an aura
Every sunflower you splash
has a glow
Every bloom on your canvas
has an nimbus
Every sky your brush catches
has a halo
... all islands of intense
illuminaton in a sea of universal
light

SCULPTOR TEACHERS

The woodpecker sculpts a home.
The baby chick chips herself
  out of prison.
The sea carves new holes
  in her caves.

PASTELS

Intense are fall's hues
Soft are spring's pastels.
Autumn's orange is specific
May's sweet pinks are pacific.
October's golds are defined
his crimsons confined
while April's soft apricot splashes
are not bound or lined.

GEORGIA O'KEEFE

Georgia, the artist, slipped from her body.
Death's imprimatur minted her work with higher value.
On her abandoned aprons were beautiful abstracts.  In the
room empty canvases sunlit gilded would not feel her brush nor reflect her vision. For she was entering a much vaster studio. Like a chambered nautilus she left behind confining limitation
while some of her students would transcend imitation.
