Gadfly
I ask rhetorical questions
People say I’m arguing,
I’m trying to be friendly,
Not prying, not incisive.
Just curious in a Socratic
Way, but it squeezes fury
Out of the hoi-polloi.
Elicits a squirm, an
Interrogatory paranoid
Response preparing them
To initiate a fencing
Position unintended
On my part. I wonder?
O what have I unlidded
Or ignited in their cauldron
That would have them
Foist such vehemence
Upon me. Lesson! Never
Ask questions demanding
A response, no matter
How innocuous a gadfly
You may appear to be.
