Certain names bring their bearers a confidence
that transcends fear in extraordinary
ways: unlike the rather sad experience
of the awkward and bullied "Fairy Jerry,"
who had lacked defense.
Starward-Led
Author's Notes/Comments:
The verbal attack of my roommate, who declared to me that I was not welcome to join him and his new circle of friends for meals would have socially debilitated "Fairy Jerry." But, to Starwatcher, it was of little consequence; as he and his friends, all pugs, were unable to appreciate love (such as I had felt toward BlueShift), or stars (as in astronomy), or poetry. When he told me, in mid-May, 1977, that we would not be roommates during sophomore year, he seemed genuinely surprised, and perhaps even insulted, that I had already been invited to share a room with one of our neighbors.
