"Those queers up the street (my acquaintance with them is slight;

"brown they are, unlike the rest of us, Anglo-Saxon white)

"were photographed---shirtless, barefoot, clad in baggy jeans,

"in front of the most dramatic of background scenes:

"a summer, late evening sky full of stars and their effulgent light.

"And, though I should not express prejudice toward those queers and their race,

"they seemed---in the photograph---queerer and browner in that flaunted embrace."
