Save Some Light for Me

How many sanctioned zones must I cross now?

Will I need passports, crude forms of ID?

There is only so much you can allow –

I must look at these things objectively.

I searched for a fissure in the dark

But learned to settle for a wisp of gold,

A small but satisfactory spark

That seeped out and warmed me when nights grew cold.

Now you’ve turned around to find your curtains drawn,

The sun bursting in from all directions.

The night is at its darkest before the dawn,

So I hold my tongue on interjections.

I can only hope you will save some light for me –

While you will have sunburn, I will have ebony.
