Limestone and Dirt

I once dwelt in fields of purple flowers

And gazed up in wonder at twinkling stars.

In no time I’d while away the hours

Sheltered from the rumble of passing cars.

Now that solace on which I could rely

Has been upended by rot and decay.

There’s no more magic when I search the sky.

The flowers have wilted and gone away.

They bulldozed beauty that can’t be replaced

And trampled on the peace I held so dear.

Now I’m just another among the chased,

Driven out into a world ruled by fear.

I’ve had my blessings, but with all the hurt

All I can see now is limestone and dirt.
