The Lover

In my life I’ve been any number of things –

Some have been made to stay,

Others wrested away,

As for everything there’s a time and place.

And so now, for you, in this sacred space,

It’s time for me to be the lover.

I’ll make all things right that have ever been wrong

That exist within my power,

Burnish the refrain of our favorite song

Till it laps against you hour by hour.

Whatever is tarnished

Will now be golden and lush,

Replaced with unvarnished

Truth and the night’s gentle hush.

For the absent things that bloomed into ache

And other ones in need of repair

I look in your eyes and sense what’s at stake

With a means to soothe the damage there.

I will work to learn what I don’t know

And stand by you no matter the cost.

We have what it takes to give and grow

While we recover what has been lost.

Yes, in my life I have been any number of things –

Some have been made to stay,

Others wrested away,

As for everything there’s a time and place.

And so now, for you, in this sacred space,

It’s time for me to be the lover.
