They Also Wanted

If so many fought hard,

Held strong,

Bravely smiled through the pain

Only to end up alone,

What’s to make me different?

Once more

I stand out in the rain

On the same limb that I’ve known.

They also wanted love

And look at them now -

Some gloomy, some content,

Spending their nights in beds so cold -

Beds like the one I make.

It’s too familiar

With its lonely indent,

A reminder I’m growing old.

Will fortune favor me and smile,

Humor me and stay awhile,

Or up and leave without a trace

If it shows up in the first place?

If you find it funny to fret or romanticize

I can’t say that I blame you -

Go ahead and laugh -

But I would hardly be the first lover to realize

He’s had a lifetime to go through

With no other half.

They also wanted love

And look at them now -

Some gloomy, some content,

Spending their nights in beds so cold -

Beds like the one I make.

It’s too familiar

With its lonely indent,

A reminder I’m growing old.
