Come Midnight

I give my all and stand by my actions

Whether I win or go down in flames.

I’ve no means to control your reactions

Or somehow thwart your misguided aims.

There’s a great deal I don’t understand

And all too little I do,

But I know what my heart can withstand

Need not always follow through.

What a thing, me staring in the mirror

Trying to somehow get my armor right.

It’s conspicuous as I draw nearer

That my heart could do with a means for flight.

I want you beside me more than you know,

But I have to know I’ll merely stumble

If you break from me and decide to go –

I can’t allow my whole world to crumble.

Come midnight I’ll throw fear away,

Get lost in the sights, the sounds, the thrill of it all.

My fervent wish is that you stay,

But life is short and I intend to have a ball,

With or without you.
