The Longest Night

Where I find myself is cold and forgotten.

I tremble within as I crawl into bed.
This is a place souls turn withered and rotten.
In the absence of angels I lightly tread.
I think about you and what you’ve meant to me,

My special friend who’s been there for me always.
Ours is not a love told traditionally
Yet you’re there without fail to brighten my days.

I’m sorry to say it’s abundantly clear

That somewhere on our path I took you for granted.

There’s no love or protection without you here –

My bid for independence must be recanted.

I settle in to sleep, no chance for flight,

Braced to embark upon my longest night.
