Pieces of the Moon

As I venture where no man can find me

The eye of the city steadily fades.

Past the icy wood my soul is set free

As I reach a place where starlight cascades.

The glint as it greets me cradles a tear,

Aware so it seems of my age-old plight.

Galileo surely felt small from here

And on that score our minds have met tonight.

I’m safe at last in this sanctified space

Where bittersweet madness can’t overtake,

Yet still I know no solace can erase

The simple fact of my humdrum heartbreak.

Silly fool! All this time and you’ve no clue

I’d have claimed pieces of the moon for you.
