Mail Order Groom

It's a task to fend off those shoe-button eyes –
Tall, dark and handsome.
Piercing, wolf-like, the element of surprise –
Worth a king's ransom.

She stands there transfixed and I,
Inevitably, fade into the background.
Spotlight descends from on high;
Destiny comes calling – the handsome prince is crowned.

Streetlights barely light the way home.
From the thunder I hide.
Perhaps I'll hide in Styrofoam -
To the trash heap I'm tied.

This is the last chance.
This is where it all ends.
This is where the tide levels
And the river bends.

I will prepare to receive demonstrations
And not appraise their seed.
I will heed the call of all exhortations,
Attend to every need.

There comes a time when there is no time
And your world breathes less green, less clean.
I will drink water though I longed for wine,
I will choose obscurity over unseen.

This is a closeout, a total liquidation.
Everything must go.
Tear open the box, forego anticipation.
Is it yes or no?

This is the last chance.
This is where it all ends.
This is where the tide levels and the river bends.
