I wake to the sound of chirping birds
I turn over to face your smiling face
You lean closer and brush your lips on my nose
You roll out of bed, hop in the shower
When I get out of the shower you meet me at the door
With a tray of freshly made breakfast
We sit in bed eating pancakes together
You clean the kitchen and put away the dishes
You slip your coat over your broad shoulders
As you hold my coat while I slid my arms in
We walk to the cars, kiss goodbye
Go our separate ways, heading to work
I always bet you home but today
Your car is parked in the garage when I get there
I walk in the front door, without a soul in sight
I shout your name, but everything is still and silent
I walk to the bed room to change
And find you waiting there for me
Down on one knee with a ring in your hand
You barley get the question out
Before I jump into your arms and say
“YES, yes”
I wake to the sound of chirping birds
I turn over to face your smiling face
You gently kiss me on the lips
You roll out of bed and head for the shower
When I get out of the shower and head for the kitchen
You've made breakfast and the kids are ready for school
We help them put their coats on and grab their backpacks
We wave goodbye as they get on the bus
We leave the house together and say love you
And head our separate ways, off to work
When I get home the kids meet me at the door
With a big bear hug, I start making dinner
When you get home the kids jump on you
After they scurry back to their rooms
You sneak up behind me at the kitchen counter
And give me a sweet kiss on my neck
After dinner we put the kids to bed
And we dance late into the night
I wake to the sound of chirping birds
I roll over to your smiling face
You kiss me gently and head to the shower
I head to the kitchen and make some breakfast
The house stands silent
The kids have grown and moved out
You meet me in the kitchen and we sit
Talk over pancakes and coffee
No work today, the first day of retirement
I think I will work on my garden
Your arthritis has grown worse over the years
Making it hard to work with your projects
You bring me a big glass of cold lemonade
We head in the house as the sun starts to set
We sit on the couch holding hands
Then head off to bed because it’s late
I wake to the sound of chirping birds
Roll over to your cold face
I sit up and cry
You have gone
And until the day
I wake up to your smiling face again
I will live in your memory
And love
