I came back years later, much later.

The incline had eroded in one section,

and someone had placed a plank across the dip

so people wouldn't lose their footing.


I stood where you had paused,

trying to understand what you meant then.

The water still moved past the stones,

with the same pace it kept before.

 

Your earlier comment surfaced again,

unceremonious as that first time

— a strainless way of pacing the day.

I could see it now, though the scene itself

offered no reason to admit anything aloud.
