"at the bank"
You stepped down the incline
before I did,
testing the ground
with the side of your shoe
as if the soil might shift under you.
The water
wasn’t doing anything remarkable
—just moving past the stones
in its usual way—
but you watched it
as though its pace
offered a workable model
for the day.
You said
a person could move like that,
without forcing the next moment.
I heard you,
but my body
kept its usual pattern,
quick decisions,
short intervals,
as though the world
inspired them.
