Stepped On Toes

I went to church that Sunday

Wearing my prettiest dress.

The pastor started his sermon.

“I’m going to tell you how to fix your mess”

I relaxed just a little bit,

“I’m safe today” I thought to myself.

“I have nothing too bad to hide,

And my Bible doesn’t stay on the shelf.

His sermon began quietly enough,

As he laid out his three point plan.

He said “I’m not going to say the obvious,

I’m going to speak to each woman and man”

My shoulders straightened just a bit.

‘What could he possibly say to me?

I don’t drink or smoke and I attend church!

I pray and read my Bible faithfully!’

My pastor paused for just a bit.

Then quietly asked us each to think,

“When was the last time we tried,

The hard thing, that might make us sink?”

“Have you ever stepped out and been brave?

Have you ever stepped from your neat little box?

How long has it been since you trusted in God?

To help you deal with any aftershocks?”

Suddenly, my settled and steady life,

Did not look so neat or clean,

I realized by taking the easy road,

I’d not done for God, much of anything!
