For Chris

Soft moonlight

     The stars above smiling

Breeze coming off the lake

     Kissing us sweetly

as we sit on the dock.

I feel your eyes upon me now

I turn to meet the gaze.

     "Annette," you finally manage.

Then stop and touch my cheek.

     "So beautiful," you mutter.

But soon see that I'm not buying

     your distractions.

"Annette," you speak once more.

Cast your eyes down, then look

into mine once again.

     "I love Tracy," you whisper.

I smile and ruffle your curls

"I've always known that," I state.

You return my smile

     feeling at ease once more.

You hold me close on the dock.

     "You're sweet, Annette."

     "You deserve a good guy."

     "Someday you'll find him."

I look out across the lake.

     Someday, Chris.

Maybe someday

I'll be more than a reaffirming

             fling.

Author's Notes/Comments:

I wrote this poem for my friend and for myself when i realized that I merely caused my would-be lovers to renew their commitments to their girlfriends.
