Drown

Drown

By Muriel Palanca

Still on the verge of this faint sweet surrender.

How can I trust the look in your eyes?

The way that you see me like I’m the only one.

For a moment of peace that brings down my guard.

A place of rest for a weary warrior.

Quiet innocence that has the strength to disarm.

The path to my heart, a fire forged on a mountain.

Scared to climb higher because it’s a longer way down.

The bottom was solid too many times.

So tired of fighting with each kiss of concrete.

I want this small bliss in your port of safe harbor.

If only for a moment when your eyes calm the sea.

There’s a storm on the way, demise always certain.

Time took a wrong turn at the bend of the road.

Logic and reason are burdens, unfathomed,

Chaining the heart to the science of lies.

Though now, all is driven to the bitter sorrow

Except that which longs to feel what burns in secret.

And we both walk away, knowing better or not.

It shines on between the impenetrable and the fragile.

The two of us at daybreak left hand in hand.

Echoes of doubt like a message in a bottle.

How far do we go into the depths of the ocean?

How far do we go until we both drown?
