For Lexie, My Granddaughter
Gee, I’m just a tiny little runt; my hands and feet are small,
I get so darn frustrated as I first learn to crawl.
Sometimes I do head banging against the floor; sometimes I have a little trouble
And sometimes when I try to walk, I slide or I stumble.
Okay, I think I should try this thing one more time
While I’ve still got it running fresh through my mind.
On hands and knees, frustrated the tears begin to flow,
I know I can do it, but I’m crawling way to slow.
I did it, I did it, and I grin beaming with so much pride,
It gives me a great feeling, so warm and happy inside.
Hey, I really like this crawling thing; I think I’ll do it some more,
And I set out crawling ready to explore.
