FIVE WAYS TO LOOK AT THE NUMBERLESS

FIVE WAYS TO LOOK AT THE NUMBERLESS

1

A baby opens its eyes for the first time In India

Unable to count the light flickers of the bulb;

Closes its eyes,Equally unable to count kaleidoscopic dreams.

The mother beats the earth inside

As angular sun rays catch each dust mote

2.

And no one can count

Who is truly resting

But the night is replete with stars

Each a singularity in the infinite

As among the numberless are we

And the turning leaves as they fall

Against the background of this space.

3.

In my dream I grabbed the moon

Squeezing ambient light from the sun

That dripped from all the star clusters

Then I knew The only singularity was my eye

And I One with the numberless of my dream.

4.

Not all the angular light rays

Nor infinitude of dust motes

Like angelsCan dance of the head of a pin

Except baby and I

Who know of no mathematics

Existing in all this dividing light.

5.

Baby and I dream of un-division

Where no calculus divides the light

Nor are all pinheads accounted for

Enquires and interrogatories Though blended

Cannot measure width of dreams

Nor the breadth of a singular eye.
