MY EYES

When I was in 1st grade…one day to everyone’s surprise

they lined us up in alphabetical order so they could check our eyes.

“You’ll be taking a test.” teacher said  “We’re going to test your eyes.”

which put me at the end of the line…having a last name that starts with ‘Y’

Everything I saw was blurry…which at the time I didn’t know was a flaw…

Being young I assumed what I saw is what everybody saw.

So when the teacher said in all sincerity…this was going to be a test…

from my place in the back of the line…I was determined to do my best.

As I watched the man administering the test…I noticed from the start

He pointed to the same letters every time which gave me time to learn the chart by heart.

And when it came time for my eye test…even with my blurry sight

having memorized the pattern…I got every letter  right.

So it wasn’t until the 2nd grade…away from school and classes

when my parents took me to an ophthalmologist it was determined I needed glasses.

I’ll never forget when I put my new glasses on…my mom said I turned pale

then a smile lit up my face….as for the first time I saw the world in full detail.

It’s funny but after all these years….that feeling has never gone…

as I get that same sensation every time I put my glasses on.

The other day a snowflake settled on my sleeve…and with it landing there so near

I remember thinking how that little snowflake…to me was crystal clear.

I took my glasses off and that little snowflake…now seemed so obscure…

because through my normal eyes…it was nothing but a blur.

When I put my glasses back on…then and only then

did that blur upon my sleeve…become a snowflake once again.

Some people may think having to wear glasses is a burden…

that by the creators I have been betrayed…

Not me!  Because every time I put them on…I’m back in 2nd grade.

Remembering what the world looked like…that first clear and detailed view…

and how I smile every time I put them on…seeing a world that seems brand new.
