Looking around our country and the world as I’ve watched hatred and misogyny soar
I have to wonder why more people aren’t ashamed of these feelings anymore?
Then again, I’m too old for you to ban the history I’ve read…
a history that shall and should never be forgotten…
I know our great acts as a people…as well as our most vile, shameless and rotten…
From the founding of this country we find incidents of how some people were depraved
from the way they treated the indigenous population…to the people they enslaved.
Wait! What! We forced people off their lands while other people we owned!
How did we not know behavior like this is wrong…and should never be condoned!
There are those who say we’re not the same country… all that happened back in the day
to them I say, look again…look how we’re still mistreating one another today.
It’s amazing how the fear of someone different can harden up a heart
because we’ve been mistreating people…right from our country’s start.
Japanese-Americans, Asians, people of a different color, women…pregnant women too
people with disabilities, from different countries, different races, different religions…the LGBTQ
All of you born to be the people who they are
or who worship a different God…the one you think is great
You’ve all…at one time or another, felt our prejudice…and hate.
With this mistreatment of people is still occurring around the world today…
it appears we have a history of mistreating one another this way.
Which brings me back to my original question..as I’ve watched hatred and misogyny soar:
Why aren’t we as a people more ashamed of these feelings anymore?
But as we continue to mistreat one another…now I’m not so sure.
If I should I be wondering why we’re not more ashamed…
or wondering if we ever were.
