We arrive at the beach in total darkness…trying hard not to make a peep.
We tiptoe along the sand so as not to disturb her sleep.
It’s easy to find our way…to know exactly where we’re going…
for even though the sky is dark…the sand beneath our feet is glowing.
The ocean breeze is there to greet us…as it has a hundred times before.
We know the waves are near..we can hear their soothing rhythm wash the shore
As Mother Earth slowly lifts the blanket of night…in a whisper we hear he say:
“Good morning…it’s time to wake up…wake up and greet the day.”
Slowly, imperceptibly the beach stirs…realizing her nocturnal slumber is done…
as the night cheerfully allows the beach…to be awakened by the sun.
As the sun slowly rises we notice a variety of colors…
constantly changing hues…
then the birds, from wherever they were sleeping…fly in…as if on cue.
Sandpipers, willets, seagulls hungry after a night dreaming under the moon…
Pelicans, egrets, ibises…and roseates…who bring with them their own spoon.
We notice a few boats on the water…they must have set sail in the dark…
and occasionally breaking the surface…a fin…is that a dolphin..or a shark?
Fishermen arrive…then more people from their houses and hotels….
for a morning spent along the beach…catching fish or gathering shells.
Which is our cue to leave…when all these other people arrive….
Happy to have been there…the moment…when the morning came alive.
