He bought it on a trip out west...back in 1993
And when he died, to my surprise, he left his hat to me.
On it he pinned some memories of places he had been
And when I pick it up, today, I cannot help but grin.
The fact that he loved animals is easy to deduce
There’s a dove, a horse, a buffalo, a bronco and a moose.
He visited Lambert’s Cafe in Missouri, there you catch baked rolls waiters throw.
And the World’s Only Corn Palace...where South Dakotans go.
There is a pin from Lindbergh’s flight and pins from seven different states
And I know he voted for Harry Truman back in 1948.
Yes, it’s easy to determine from the pins that encircle Grandpa’s hat
He loved animals, traveling, all types of food...and he was a Democrat.
It sits upon a hat rack where I can see it every day
And when I do it makes me feel...he’s not so far away.
I was lucky to have known him, lucky to sit upon his knee
And lucky that, when Grandpa died, he left his hat for me.
