Songs That Still Know Me

The songs from those years still know me, better than most people ever could.

They carry heavy lyrics through streets of old strangers and young lovers,

A one-way doorway I never asked to step through,

Dropping me right back into everything I left behind, with nothing in between.

I remember my reflection in freezing water under a deep orange summer sky,

Old birthday wishes folded quietly inside a rusty biscuit tin,

Midnight confessions whispered as if they were secrets meant to disappear,

And all the wild hopes I thought the years would keep safe.

Some melodies still know the exact shape of my younger heart,

The places I’ve been, the names that slipped away, the dreams that stayed,

They bring back faces softened by the rush of time,

And quiet moments I never knew I’d miss this much.

Now every chorus feels like a door left slightly cracked open,

A room where yesterday still waits without asking why,

I step inside for a minute, just long enough to remember,

Then let the music pull me gently back to right now.

Maybe that’s why I keep returning to those same songs—

They remember who I was, even when I forget.
