The Forgotten Lessons

Folder:
All of Me

It's those forgotten lessons,

The ones that they never taught us in school,

The ones we never learned along with our math or sciences.

They told us that math was so important, and made us believe that if we didn't understand geography, then we wouldn't be able to live as adults.

But really, they passed by the lessons that are most key for our survival.

The lesson of understanding that our ways aren't always right,

And that sometimes there is more than one right answer,

And that even though others have foreign ideas

They aren't necessarily wrong, just different.

They forgot to teach us to stay true to ourselves.

To uphold our own values and live our own lives,

Even if that means making mistakes.

And to love ourselves before we love anyone else.

To understand and know our own limits

Before we put faith in another and blame them when we fail.

The forgot to teach us how to be happy.

To help us understand that although life seems cruel and painful

A sunny day may be waiting just around the bend.

And that if we're unhappy, not to pretend

Because pretending doesn't make it go away.

It's okay to be sad.

They forgot to teach us that our friends should be cherished.

And that we should hold on to them as tight as possible

Because it is they who will get us through the rough times

And party with us during the good.

They forgot to teach us that truth above all is important

And to always demand it and nothing less.

To question things that seem hard to accept

And keep questioning until we get answers.

But once we get answers to stop, even if they aren't the answers we want.

All of these lessons aren't in our curriculum,

They were left untaught.

Maybe it's because you can't give worksheets on love and on happiness

Nor can you give them on hate, anger or sadness.
