“Where were you Friday night at 10 P.M,” asked Detective Gabriel Ward.
“I was hanging out with my girlfriend and my best friend,” explained Alden Abbot, son of the coffee house owner.
“What is your girlfriend’s name? What is your best friend’s name?” asked Gabriel.
“My girlfriend’s name is Angelique Brown and my best friend’s name is Emery Bosworth,” Alden Abbot said to the detective. Alden looked at the detective curiously wondering what could be going on.
“Thank you very much Alden, please don’t go anywhere we might need you for more backup,” Gabriel said to Alden
Detective Gabriel Ward went in his office to get on the phone to call Angelique and Emery’s parents to get Angelique and Emery to come down to the station.
“Mrs. Bosworth your son may be convicted of a crime, would Emery please come down to the police station we need to ask him some questions,” Gabriel said to Emery’s mother when she answered.
“Of course Mr. Ward he will come down right away, is my son in any trouble,” Mrs. Bosworth asked.
Emery had been going to the high school for juvenile delinquents for two years now. Recently he had robbed the local Texaco.
A few minutes later Angelique and Emery arrived at the Police department. They were confused as to what was going on and why they needed to be there for questioning.
“Angelique, Alden said that you two went out on Friday night, is that true,” Gabriel asked.
“No,” Angelique said, “I did not go out with Alden on Friday night.”
“I see, so Alden lied,” chimed in Jonathon Smith, Gabriel’s worthy sidekick.
“He called me around 9 P.M. but all he did was whine about how horrible his life is and how much he hates it here,” Angelique explained to Gabriel and Jonathon.
“Do you know where Alden was when he called,” asked Jonathon.
“Honestly I am not sure where he was, he may have been outside somewhere because the sound was all muffled,” Angelique confesses to Jonathon.
“Does Alden work,” asked Jonathon Smith.
At this point in time Gabriel went to talk with Emery because he knew Jonathon could take over and get enough information.
“He works at Abbot’s Coffeehouse, his father owns the shop,” Angelique told Jonathon.
In the other room, Gabriel started talking to Emery trying to find out more information.
“Emery where were you Friday night around 10 P.M.,” Gabriel asked Emery.
“I was at home getting ready to go to sleep,” Emery honestly exclaimed.
“When was the last time you seen or heard from Alden Abbot,” asked detective Gabriel.
Back in the main office Jonathon was asking Angelique question after question. Jonathon was getting annoyed with the questions about Angelique and Alden so he started asking about the coffee house.
“You say Alden’s father owns the coffee house,” Jonathon Smith asked in curiosity.
“Yes,” Angelique said, “he opened up the coffee house about three years ago after Alden’s mother passed away.”
“Did you know the coffee house is burned down,” Jonathon asked out of nowhere.
“No! When did this happen,” Angelique asked in fear.
“Friday night around 10 P.M.,” Jonathon told Angelique.
“So that is why you are asking me all of these questions about Friday night,” Angelique thought out loud.
“Yeah that is why I have been asking them,” Jonathon explained, “Let me go check on Emery and Detective Gabriel.”
Jonathon Smith went into the little corner office and checked in on Emery and Gabriel. They were not getting the information they needed, however.
“Gabriel can I see you out in the hall for just one minute,” Jonathon suggested to Gabriel.
“Sure you can,” Gabriel answered, “Emery I will be right back.”
Gabriel and Jonathon went out into the hall to find out what has been going on with each others questionings.
“Angelique has not been much help to me in this case, how has Emery been for you,” Jonathon asked.
“Emery keeps saying that he does not know what Alden was doing and that is about it,” Gabriel answered.
“Does Emery know about the coffee house being burned down,” Jonathon questioned Gabriel.
“No I do not think he does know about the coffee house,” Gabriel answered.
“Well we must tell him or how will he know what we are questioning him about,” Jonathon kindly suggested to Gabriel.
“You are right, let us go tell him,” Gabriel agreed to Jonathon’s last statement.
They went back into the room and told Emery that the coffee house was burnt down Friday night around 10 P.M. and that is why they were asking all these questions.
“You both think I am the one who burnt down the coffee house,” Emery spit out.
“No we are not accusing you we just need to ask questions to find out who did it,” Detective Gabriel told Emery.
“Emery can you please tell us all that happened Friday night,” Jonathon asked politely.
Emery pondered for a few moments about what had happened on Friday night. Finally, he remembered all the events like it were a dream that had just reoccurred.
“The night started out like any other night because I worked till 7 P.M.,” Emery started telling his story.
“Good, what happened after that,” Jonathon chimed in.
“As soon as I walked through the doors of my house I received a phone call from Alden asking if I wanted to hang out with him because he was bored,” Emery kept going with the story.
“Did you want to hang out with Alden,” Gabriel asked.
“To tell the truth I was tired of Alden. All he does lately is whine about how boring this place is because we have nothing to do,” Emery answered.
“Well that is true we are the smallest town in this state,” Jonathon entered into the conversation.
“He often tells me that he cannot wait for the day he graduates and leaves this place,” Emery added.
“Alright please continue with your story,” Detective Gabriel Ward said.
“I told Alden that he was annoying me by his attitude so I did not want to hang out with him. He got upset and hung up without saying goodbye,” Emery told the Detective.
“What did you do after he hung up,” asked Jonathon.
“I cooked dinner for my family and then watched some television. After that I was exhausted so I went to bed,” Emery finished with his story.
“So you did not see or hear from Alden any time after the phone call,” Detective Gabriel asked.
“No I did not,” Emery answered.
“Thank you for your time you may go home now,” Gabriel told Emery.
Emery gathered his things up and walked out to his car. He thought to himself why someone would burn down the coffee house and why Alden would do it. He had no answers to these questions however.
Inside the police station, Detective Gabriel Ward and his sidekick Jonathon Smith found their way back to Alden’s girlfriend Angelique.
“Angelique can you tell us all that happened Friday night,” Gabriel asked.
“Well I had dance practice till 8 P.M.,” she told Gabriel, “Practice went a little bit later than usual because we have a recital coming up.”
“After dance practice did you talk or see Alden,” Jonathon asked.
“I talked to him on the phone,” she answered
“How did the conversation on the phone go, anything peculiar,” Gabriel asked.
“Actually it was a weird conversation. He seemed extremely upset and he usually is this really sweet and caring guy,” she told the detective.
“Did he ask to hang out or anything,” Jonathon asked Angelique.
“He actually did not ask me to hang out with him. He just kept whining about how horrible his life is and how he hates living here,” Angelique explained to the detective, “Jonathon already asked me this question earlier.”
“I know Jonathon did but it is worth repeating,” Detective Gabriel Ward answered.
“What did you do after you hung up with Alden,” Jonathon asked Angelique.
“I took a shower and did my homework so I would not have to do it later,” Angelique answered, “Then I laid down to sleep.”
Detective Gabriel and his sidekick Jonathon excused themselves and went out in the hall.
“Jonathon we are getting nowhere, if Angelique and Emery are telling the truth then obviously they did not burn down the coffeehouse,” said detective Gabriel.
“So that only means one thing,” confesses Jonathon, “Alden burned down his father’s coffeehouse. Just look all the evidence is there, even a motive to do it.”
The detective and his sidekick went back into the office and told Angelique that she was free to go but she might not see Alden for a long time.
“Why would I not see Alden for a long time,” she asked in fear.
“Well, let us just say that Alden is in a lot of trouble,” Detective Gabriel Ward said.
“What did he do to get in trouble,” Angelique asked in a stupefied manner.
“He burned down the coffee house, is that not obvious,” Jonathon butted in.
Angelique started to cry because she knew that they were probably right about Alden doing the crime. She just did not want to think of the love of her life going to prison.
“Are you going to put Alden in jail,” Angelique asked curiously.
“Hmm…we are not sure if we will or not,” Jonathon said.
Cases like this it is always hard to tell what the punishment for the crime should be.
“Angelique,” Detective Gabriel Ward said, “You should go tell Alden goodbye and then head on home.”
Angelique got up and walked out to greet Alden. He had been waiting in that cold, dark room for hours.
“Alden they said it is time for me to go home,” Angelique confesses to Alden, “I love you and will see you later.”
“I love you too Angelique and I will see you soon,” Alden replied.
Angelique starts to cry as she walks out the doors of the police station and heads on her way home. Angelique knows that she may never see Alden again.
After Angelique left the building Detective Gabriel and his sidekick went into the little black room to talk to Alden.
“After talking with your best friend and your girlfriend we have come to a conclusion,” Gabriel stiffly said.
“What is your conclusion,” Alden asked pathetically.
“You know quite well what that is,” Gabriel snickered, “You burned down your father’s coffeehouse.”
“What,” Alden asked, “I did not do such a thing!”
“All the evidence that we have gotten from your friends tonight shows that you did do it,” Detective Gabriel explained.
“What evidence,” Alden asked.
“First of all, you were in town at the time of the incident, while most people were not,” Gabriel said.
“Another thing,” Jonathon added, “you were upset and you are usually a nice guy.”
“Honestly those do not mean a thing,” Alden said in an upset tone.
“Well there is more evidence,” Jonathon added, “you complained about how you hate life and how boring it is here.”
“So that does not mean I would burn down my father’s coffee house,” Alden whined.
“Oh but you had motive to do such a thing,” Detective Gabriel said.
About five seconds later Emery walked into the little black office where Alden, the detective and his sidekick were sitting.
“Mr. Ward and Mr. Smith, I am the culprit here, I burned down the coffee house,” Emery confessed.
"Why do you admit this now," Gabriel asked.
"I do not believe him for one second," Jonathon added.
"He is probably just trying to protect his friend Alden," accused Gabriel.
"No, I swear I burned down the coffeehouse," argued Emery
Truthfully is that Emery did not commit this viscious crime. Emery did not have the motive to do it nor the oppurtunity.
"Emery," scolded Gabriel, "I think you best go on home."
"Well I am sorry that you do not believe me," stated Emery.
Emery walked back out of the office and back out to his car. He did not want to see his best friend go to the school for juvinile dilinquents or even worse to prison. He brushed the thought from his head and walked to his car.
Inside the police station Gabriel and Jonathon were talking with Alden about his consequences for his actions.
"We have been thinking about the consequences all night and we decided to leave the punishment up to your father," Gabriel insisted.
"Okay but my dad is going to be really upset," Alden explained, "he loved his coffeehouse."
"Well you should have thought about your father's feelings before you burned down his coffeehouse," Jonathon warned Alden.
Gabriel exused himself to go call Aldens father, Mr. Chauncey Abbot.
"Mr. Abbot," Gabriel asked when Mr. Abbot picked up the phone.
"Yes this is he," Mr. Abbot answered, "May I ask who is calling?"
"I am Detective Gabriel Ward," Gabriel replied, "I am with the Texas Police Department and I have your son down here in my office."
"Why do you have my son there," Chauncey curiously asked.
"Well," Gabriel started to answer hesitantly, "I am sorry to tell you but he burned down your coffeehouse."
"My coffeehouse," Chauncey shrieked, "when did this happen?"
"Friday night at 10 P.M.," Gabriel said, "You must have been out of town when this happened. My sidekick and I have decided we will let your son go and you can punish him because he is not old enough to go to jail."
"Okay thank you very much detective," Chauncey said.
The two of them hung up the phone and Detective Gabriel Ward went back to the office to tell Alden he was free to go. Alden felt relieved because he would not be going to jail.
When Alden arrived home he did not feel as relieved. As soon as he walked in the front door his father was sitting in his chair with a look of murder on his face.
"Dad let me explain, Alden started explaining," I did not mean to..........."
"You did not mean to burn down my coffeehouse," Mr. Abbot butted in.
"I am sorry," Alden added, "I do not know what i was thinking."
"Well it is late," Mr. Abbot said in a scolding tone, "We will talk about your punishment later. Now go to your room."
