You can’t trap butterflies in glass jars.
They were created to be free,
To fly wherever the wind took them,
Not to be confined and scrutinized.

You might be able to get them
To rest in your open palm for a while
(Or to flutter around in your belly)
But invariably they will move on.

God designed their path so they were
Exactly where they needed to be:
Whether captured in a cocoon or
Bringing joy to a hopeless person.

We should not disrupt God’s plan,
Just be grateful when he allows
These marvelous creatures to grace
Your life, even if only for a season.
