Have you ever lied

When someone asked you

If you were ok?



I know I have.



I did today.



Maybe I wasn’t lying

To them as much as

I was lying to myself,

Pretending I was fine

When in fact I was

In so much pain.



Or maybe knowing

That they weren’t

Really looking for

A truthful answer

Made me fib a little

So they could go on

With their lives.



I was being selfless, right?



And sometimes

That’s enough to

Numb the pain.
