It’s a parking lot
my neighbor’s park their cars
they try to keep their vehicle
visible to their window
I look out at the parked cars
The dumpster’s getting filled up
with holiday excess
the unnecessary packaging
destined for a landfill
now littering the ground
the people get in and out of cars
people argue with relatives
and carry boxes and bags
a few people walk their dogs
the dogs barking joyously
in the winter
the trees are barren
and we can see
all the cars
and the people conducting
their everyday lives
I watch people discard
fast food containers
on the ground
disposable as their own lives
their indifference
to their own home shocking
I bury my face
back on the monitor
determined to see
if the trash inside
equals the trash outside
