are dropping like

flies

I say this

with sorrow

and trepidation

but it’s reality

nonetheless

like it or not

Sun Ra, Dizzy Gillespie,

Charles Bukowski, Jerry Garcia

the legends

are dropping
and we’ve yet

to find suitable

replacements

It fills me

with sorrow

looking on

at the role call

of fallen warriors

the legends,

near legends

and honorable mentions

are dropping

and in the place

is a void;

a void we must fill

on our own

and that just seems

like a really large task

something we may not

be up to
