The Seashore

Let’s walk along the shore before sunrise,

While the sky is dim and the sea lies still.

Let’s breathe in the crisp salt-infused breeze,

And listen to the waves slipping in and out.

As the sun starts to edge up over the horizon,

We’ll wander across the damp sand,

Laughing when the cold water catches our feet,

As we pick up fine, brittle shells one by one.

When the day grows warmer, brighter,

We’ll rest beneath the leaning coconut tree,

Watching the foamy sea flash and scatter,

Like polished light breaking across the water.

And when evening comes, slow and orange,

We’ll build a castle out of sand,

Like the friendship we shaped long ago,

Still standing, quietly, on this same shore.

Author's Notes/Comments:

Inspired by our out-of-town summer trip with friends, I wrote this poem to capture the ocean’s beauty.
