ODE ON SLEEPLESSNESS

The rising sun finds me awake,
And when it sets I am up and about,
Doing all I can to make the world,
A better place, day in, day out.

Sleep does not come to soothe me,
Nor does it make me feel relaxed,
The moon comes and with the stars,
It smiles and greets me shyly.

A cup of hot tea or good coffee,
From a caring soul I often crave,
A greeting of "Hi, Good Morning"
Or: "Hope you slept well honey".

Love cannot be forced or claimed,
Nor can it be gained by complaining,
I have been made to seek company,
Even when I am in the midst of crowds:
And even when thronged at a party,
This heart has been made to feel lonely.
My friends - a countable few they are -
Are scattered across the continents,
And my gaze keeps scanning the globe,
Till everything relights my memory...

In an Earth where selfishness thrives,
Where greed and lust control minds,
Where nothing matters more than money,
How can I urge sleep to embrace me?

There was a time when I was a child,
When my mother would sing a lullaby,
And then came my sweet Daphne,
Who never made me feel gloomy.

Those days of selfless love and care,
Intrude when black and dark invade,
And not a friend can a moment spare,
To give my weary eyes some shade.

Often I am lost in my realm of dreams,
Where everything gladdens the sight,
When I am happy to be unaware,
Of even myself and my restless night.
