A sad face encountered on the way,
Volumes of grief in abundant sway,
With a caring thought I ventured to ask,
The cause of pain, she would not talk:
After a word of solace from my side,
She looked at me and then replied:
"Forty days and nights for the world to drown?
"A teardrop does it when a broken heart mourns!"
With these words she crept back and fled,
As if for her, the whole world were dead.

Author's Notes/Comments:
It is related in the Old Testament of the Bible and the Glorious Qur'an that the world drowned after a huge rainstorm and floods during the time of Prophet Noah (Peace be upon him). Here that incident is used to compare it with the intensity pf a broken heart's sorrow-filled teardrop. Inspired after a meeting with a young woman, whose lover had promised to marry her, but did not. He married a rich woman instead and the poor young maiden suffered. She looked like a well-educated person but the sadness on her countenance was unmistakably immeasurable and invisible except to those people who have a heart that really beats.
