THE AFGHAN GIRL 'LIVES'

Boarding a bus after some effort
I alighted at Nathiagali
Hoping to find the bold young lass
The "Afghan girl" of Murree.
After a long search here and there
I was taken to a spot forsaken
And meant for the 'gone ones' only,
And found 'her' silent, under a tree.
My guide said she had been killed
By a truck which struck her wildly
And as her soul flew high to heaven
Her mortal remains lie here "safely".
I cannot write more for my heart swells up
With more emotion than any one can know
I looked around and I thought I saw her
Perched up high on a branch of that tree.
We poets are very soft and tender
And our feelings run asunder
So I exclaimed: "Hey, she is living, just see:
"High up yonder, waving at me..."
My guide patted me and nodded his head
He understood how I was feeling and said:
"Yes sir, that girl is now a martyr
"And will always be alive, not dead."
