ONLY TIME IS MINE

In this life of ours
We have only time
Time and just time.
So let me spend mine
In the best ways I can
By believing in goodness
And thinking good.
By making myself good,
In intention, thought and deed.
Lure me not into discourse
Vain and fruitless
And which could be merely
Just a waste of time.

I have had enough
Of wrangling on matters
That have been mostly
A loss to me and mine.
The life we have
Is also a span of time
To make us aware
Of the unseen divine.
It comes with goodness
And not with wealth,
Women and children.
Everything we acquire
In this allotted lifetime
Will be taken by others
After our stay here --
Our time...
So let me become fine
Not just dust and clay
But spiritually sublime.
I have already lost much
Of what was really mine
My measured span of time
Given to me by Him
Who is the most divine.

I agree with Kahlil Gibran
And Rumi and Khayyam,
And like them, I too say::
Nothing is ours...but time.
The lives of every wise one
Have revealed it to me
That what is just mine
Is nothing else... but time.

Author's Notes/Comments:

KAHLIL GIBRAN pronounced as KHALIL JIBRAN is a well known Lebanese poet, philosopher and mystic. I am sure most of the poets and readers are familiar about him and his life as well his works.
RUMI whose full name is Jallaludin Rumi, was a Turkish philosopher, poet and mystic whose works are even read worldwide and admired and critically appreciated for the wisdom he propounds.
OMAR KHAYYAM was a Persian astronomer, mathematician and a poet who is famous on account of his RUBAIYATS (QUATRAINS) especially the ones translated by Fitzgerald. The translations are not true to the original wisdom and mystical connotations used by Khayyam but even then they hold a lot for everyone who wants to read and enjoy metaphysical poetry.
