The green actually hurt her eyes. After 35 years of living in the adobe landscape of the desert, her sight was unaccustomed to the color of lush vegetation. And the smell, slightly metallic, petrichor of alluvial decay, triggered primal memory of a lifetime spent in the pre-historic rainforest of what is now known as the Amazon basin.
