My Grandfather’s buckle is nothing but a normal buckle, I thought, but my grandfather’s buckles have a meaning I didn’t expect. The buckle has the logo of his ranch, his pride and joy, his childhood, if you could call it that. His story is one of a child working to give food to his mother, brothers and sisters; he worked hard every day since he was 16 because his father leaves them with big liabilities and him being the big brother, he stood up for everyone. He sold the ranch he was so passionate about and begins to work for the new owner of his beloved ranch. He did not want to give that kind of life to his children so with the money he earn he started studying law on San Cristobal de las Casas, Chiapas. While he was studying law at the only law university of Chiapas he started thinking that he wanted that ranch back from the owner so he made a deal with him. The deal was that he needed to pay double the price of the ranch because those where times where the ranch was giving lots of money. So my grandfather never gave up on it and pays it in 15 years and made the logo of the ranch that he is so proud of and made a buckle out of it with the name Reforma and the logo of it recorded on his big shiny buckle. Before he told me this great story about how much he fight for the one and only thing he had in the past, and that buckle he uses everyday and everywhere is the symbol of all he had done in the past to help his family get thru all of those problems and got to surpass them.
