Mr. Pretender
One of my favorite songs by Jackson Browne (The Pretender) inspired this write.
Hoist the sails, and paper trails
Chase the dollar, and all it will render
Surprise you not, disguise you may
Go ahead and pretend…Mr. Pretender
Don’t know who
You were trying to kid
Knew what you’d do
When you did, what you did
Don’t defend, the verdict of the lender
For you can’t have what you ain’t got…Mr. Pretender
What we learned here
Is love taste bitter when it’s gone
You mustn’t have any fear
For you knew it all along
That true love’s not always, returned to the sender
And hate may be your fate, make no mistake…Mr. Pretender
Wishin doesn’t make it so, my friend
and you will never know, what might have been
So take your fairytale dreams, and happy disguise
Pick up the pieces, where your heart lies
And drink a toast, to what Jack Black will render
Fool yourself, Mr. Pretender…into thinking that love
My friend…could have been… a contender
