The holy nuns strode softly with silken steps upon the road
The old man followed slowly, weary from his load
The nuns moved swiftly without a single care
Not to see the man as if he wasn't there
He chased the nuns, they held the truth
The truth to set him free.
The nuns went through the forest
and the old man tagged behind
Past the bent and twisted trees
Eerie shadows not set free
The birds they were silent
And the wolves were hiding near
Made it out the other side, found a narrow road
Beside the road a gentle girl
A girl of 16 years.
She'd known the pain and felt the fears
She told the man she knew his tears
She told the man she knew the pain
told the man she could explain
said sometimes things wont change too soon
and it's best to hide in your cocoon
The old man held the sweet girl's hand
said it's kind you tried to understand
But there's torment and there's trouble and tumble in the mind
and there's some things that can't be left behind.
He continued on the journey, the nuns were still in sight
Went past a drunk, looking for a fight
Past the old horse stables and past a broken mill
Across the bald paddock that had been eaten bare
The horses lay down dead and didn't have a care
They came to a deep canyon
And the nuns slid gently down inside
They crossed across the bottom
and glided up the other side.
The old man tumbled down the side and stopped and moved no more
Bruised and battered
and broken to his core
The holy flock got the call and hurried to the scene
They numbered many hundred, maybe even more
They came from every building and came out every door
They had marched through the valleys and marched across the hills
They had ran through the forest and across the grassy plain
till they stood united, on the canyon rim
The holy sisters smiled
Then they started up a chime
that reached skyward with a holy rhyme
"Holy Jesus up above"
"Holy Jesus full of love"
Then the call came from the nun
For the crowd to chant in unison
"Holy Jesus up above"
"Holy Jesus full of love"
It was just another holy jingle
Gave man's brain an angry tingle
An echo from a childhood day
Locked in head, there to stay
The nuns then looked down below
Smug and smirked at the broken man
The nuns had spoke without a word
But without the words the crowd still heard
The crowd then yelled and cursed the man
And the attack had just begun
The children then had their time
They mocked the man with silly rhyme
One man in the crowd had just come along for the ride
He didn't take a single side
He said if you all dance to the beat
you end up like a flock of sheep
One day the worm could turn
and then the strong may burn
Mighty castle wall
will not stop the strong to fall
The man then walked away
The clouds rolled in to block the sky
The vultures came and circled high
for there was to be a feast
The old man shuffled off along the canyon floor
He became a distant spec, then was seen no more
The vultures did not follow but remained circled above the crowd
People looked around, seen fear in every eye
The vultures began to circle, lower in the sky
An icy chill went through each heart
They knew that it was time to part
It was silence like you've never heard
as they slowly walked away
And the leaves refused to rustle sound
underneath their feet.
