The Body of Christ
The body of Christ
Broken for you
The words intoned
With solemn reverence
As wafer moves from
Dish to lips
And another supplicant
Moves from the rail
The body of Christ
Broken for you
The words trail
From cathedral to home
Where abuse rains
Down in careless
Succession upon wife
And child
The body of Christ
Broken for you
The words trail
From home to office
Where business reigns
Heedless of the aftermath
Widows, orphans left to fend
For themselves
The body of Christ
Broken for you
The words trail
From office to nation
Where policy reins
Considerations of mercy
Politically incorrect to
Spineless weather vanes
The body of Christ
Broken for you
The words trail
From nation to world
Where war reigns
All too often in the
Name of Him who
Advocated peace
The body of Christ
Broken for you
The words resound
Within my ears
Where confusion reigns
And leaves me wondering
Why Christ’s body
Need ever be broken again
in Church
When we’re doing such a fine job
Of breaking it today
everywhere else
