The Alley.

The Alley.

The alley way is very narrow in fact one could shake hand with the opposite neighbour. This was an alley that never saw the Sun a pale light even in the summer months. I have never been here before although the alley is in the middle of Soho. No one could walk two abreast the doors were lacking paint and the houses were dilapidated. Slowly walking along the alley careful not to brush against the walls I came unexpectedly to an open door. A voice called,”Come on in.” The room as walked through the door was dark and dismal with an old oil lamp lighting up a small area. Shadows were to be seen and here and there a shelf or two.

The voice that had called come on in was sitting on a perch it was a parrot. The feathers of the parrot were the only colourful things in the room. I decided to leave the shop if it was a shop when another voice called out, “How may I help you?” “Everything in the shop is at half price I only have bargains.” A small man appeared from somewhere at the back of the shop. “Would you be after something magical?” were his next words. Now I was fully concentrated, something magical promised to be a new adventure. The elderly man took a small packet from a shelf and thrust it into my hand.

What happened next I do not know for I suddenly found myself in my kitchen with the small packet still in my hand. All happened so quickly that I had, had no time to ask what the package cost. Some mysterious force had taken me bodily and transferred me into my own home. To get over the shock I quickly made myself a pot of hot sweet tea After drinking the first cup I took the package in my hand and carefully unwrapped the brownish stained paper covering. Inside was a diamond just one diamond. Now I began to worry I had left the shop without paying and an expensive diamond was now in my hand. Examining the diamond I found that I was looking into my own future.

It is my habit to look every day at my calendar. It is one of those calendars that one tears off each day as it passes. Looking at the calendar I saw that that I was looking into my own future. The calendar now showed the date for a week ahead. This was too much I do not want to know my future I take each day as it comes along. What to do with this unexpected present. I could not sell it, it could be too dangerous in the wrong hands why what if someone looked at the stock exchange a week ahead he or she could become very rich overnight.

There was only one person that I could think of that I could safely give the diamond to and that was Her Majesty Queen Feeanna, Queen of all the Fairies. Walking with the diamond clutched tightly in my hand I walked to the clearance by the old oak tree and sent a robin to take a message to Her Majesty. A little later Her Majesty appeared in her usual flash of blue light. I told her of my trip to Soho and of my finding the alleyway where the shop was situated. Her Majesty smiled and changed so suddenly that I was taken by surprise. Instead of Her Majesty now in front of me stood the little elderly man on his shoulder a colourful parrot. It was the man from the shop. I blurted out, “How much do I owe you?” “You did not give me time to pay for the package. The little elderly man changed back into Her Majesty. “Mr. Shaw how could I charge you for something that I know you do not want. You see a Human cannot possess the diamond that shows one’s future. It would turn to a black carbon mess and no one would want that.

With a sigh of relief I handed the diamond to Her Majesty I was glad to have got rid of it. Her Majesty took the diamond and holding it up to the Suns light she rubbed it in her fingers. The diamond vanished leaving a small quantity of black carbon. Smiling she said, “Now the diamond has turned back into what it was originally. Just carbon before it was subjected to a high pressure. We may all now be assured that no one will be able to look into the future.” We parted and I went back to my kitchen to make another pot of sweet tea to get over my little experience with a diamond that could show ones future. I drank at least three cups of my sweet tea before I forgot the episode of the diamond. Bern
