Tomboy.
A new family have moved in to next door but one a large family of nine or ten children. The leader of the group of children was a girl she was what one could call a typical Tomboy there is nothing that she could not do. No tree was too tall for her to climb. No stream to wide for her to jump over. She was not afraid to get wet or dirty and her clothing was at times torn. The other children followed her and soon all the other children in the street had joined up with what I now call Tomboy’s gang. My first dealing with the gang was in the clearing by the old oak. The Fairies had got things ready for a dance that evening. The clearing was covered in fresh mushrooms and toadstools that the fairies used for seats. The gang swooped on the toadstools and mushrooms and kicked most of them into small pieces.
The Fairies watched the gang from a distance and I saw many a magic wand pointed at the children of the gang. A loud cry of Fairies, it was the voice of Tomboy her next words were “catapults.” Soon stones were flying in the general direction of the Fairies. The Fairies fought back they used their magic wands to fling mud at the gang. I am afraid the Fairies were the better shots and soon the whole gang was covered in mud splashes. Pixies came to the help of the Fairies and soon the Trolls against such opposition the Gang retreated. How they managed to explain their dirty clothes to their parents I do not know.
My next encounter with Tomboy was later that week I had gone into the clearing and settled myself down under the old oak tree. I might not have noticed her, she was on her own and was using every tree and bush to hide from I take it the Fairies. A sparrow told me that she was in Fairyland as she went to run across the clearing I called to her. On hearing my voice she stopped and looked over at me. Then she boldly approached and without my asking her she sat down on one of the other roots of the old oak tree.
A Fairy came into view and the tomboy pulled out of her pocket a nasty looking catapult. She shot a stone at the Fairy luckily she missed but it had shot past the fairy at speed. I grabbed the girl’s arm. Catapults are not allowed here in the woods put it away I spoke gently I did not want her to think that I was against her. I asked her why she used a catapult against the Fairies. Fairies do no one any harm they are peaceful so why do you want to hurt them? This is the story she told me. The first child of the family had died later the girl’s mother told each child that their eldest brother had been taken away by the Fairies. This was an easy way of telling the children that their first child had gone to Heaven. Now for Tomboy all Fairies were to blame that the eldest boy was gone. For some reason Tomboy had always been able to see the Fairies and it seems all of her brothers and sisters as well.
Soon the clearing filled with Fairies. Tomboy became uneasy and I thought that she was going to use her catapult again. Fairies I told her do not take children. What would they do with a child first a human child would be too heavy. The Fairies could never look after it or feed it. I gently explained that some children die and go to heaven and parents that tell children that Fairies have taken a child do not know how to tell the children of dieing so they tell them little white lies.
Tomboy thanked me for telling her about the Fairies and she accepted that her eldest brother had died and gone to heaven. I often see the gang here in Fairyland but now they are in harmony with the Fairies. Tree houses have been built by the gang part of the stream had been turned into a pool for the gang to swim. For a while all of Fairyland was pulling together Pixies Trolls and Fairies for a very short time were at peace. I think that the gang has shown them how strong they are when they help each other. No more trouble from the gang either all have grown up and moved away. Now I have the old oak tree and the clearing to myself. I love the peaceful atmosphere of Fairyland but I sometimes think of Tomboy and her gang. Bern
