The Electric Light Bulbs.
There must be something wrong with the electric light in my kitchen. It flickers then goes out only to come back on after a few minutes. I had renewed the light fitting and changed the bulb but the light still flickers and goes out only to light up a few minutes later. Going to my ironmongers I bought a reel of new electric wire and new bulbs. Changing the wire or better rewiring my kitchen and replacing the light fitting and a new bulb I switched on the kitchen light the same thing happened all over again a flickering and the light went off. This only happened in the kitchen over the rest of the house all was in order. I do not read very much by electric light, as I am afraid of ruining my eyesight. So this flickering and the light going out did not really bother me. It was just annoying.
Later the same thing happened to my bedroom light. A flicker and the light went off then after a minute or so came back on again. I was now considering having all of the electric wiring renewed and at the same time have a new fuse box built in. A firm of electricians came after I phoned them. Soon the whole house was rewired with new light fittings and fuses. I paid the firm that had renewed the lighting. Now I thought nothing can go wrong and settled back to wait for the evening. The evening came and I switched on the light in my kitchen. A few seconds of bright light then the flickering again and the light went out. Now I was worried and went up to the bedroom. The bedroom light did exactly the same thing it flickered and the light went out only to come on again. I knew that I could do no more the whole house has been rewired the light fittings and bulbs replaced.
A couple of days later I sorted out my washing and placed the white washing in the washing machine and switched it on. I heard the water being pumped into the machine and walked away from the scullery where the washing machine stood. After lunch I went to see how the washing was getting on. To my dismay the washing machine had stopped working altogether. I switched it back on again and waited a few minutes to see what would happen. The washing machine stopped again. Washing machines are expensive I now had something else to worry about. I could buy a new machine but what if the same thing happens to a new machine. To go without fresh clothes is unthinkable. The same thing happened to the vacuum cleaner. Something was drastically wrong in the house of Shaw. The radio is still working so is the television but for how much longer.
I sat in my kitchen listening to the radio when suddenly Shamus my Leprechaun friend stepped out of the radio. “You are in trouble Bern tell me about it.” I told of the happenings with the electricity and how I have had all the wiring, the light fittings and the fuse box renewed. Now my washing machine and the vacuum cleaner are playing up on me. Shamus took his shillelagh and waved it in the air. To my surprise a House Bogie stood in the middle of my kitchen. Shamus asked him why he was messing about with the electrics. His answer was that he was afraid to show himself and tried to get me to notice him by first fiddling with the lights then the washing machine and the vacuum cleaner. He wanted to be my House Bogie but was afraid to come out in the open and ask me for the position of House Bogie.
Shamus then told him that he had through his foolishness cost me a large amount of money. The Bogie stood on his head and told me that he would repay all of my costs by doing all of the cooking all of the washing and all of the house cleaning. He would do this for ten years if I let him stay and live in my house. Shamus and I were finding it difficult to keep a straight face. I put the Bogie out of his misery by telling him he could stay and be my House Factotum for as long as likes. He was not to worry about the costs involved by renewing all of the electric wiring and fittings as they were very old and needed to be replaced. Now I have a well-trained House Bogie and I must admit it is good to get up in the mornings to go downstairs and smell the freshly made breakfast. If you are having trouble with your electricity like I have had then make sure there is not a House Bogie playing tricks to get your attention. Bern
