Speaking Book.

Speaking Book.

When I was a young man one of the neighbours held a boot sale in his drive in. I must admit I was curious to see what he had to offer. From the boot of his car he sold some tools and a few car parts. On a table in the driveway were a few pieces of crockery and some ashtrays nothing to incite me to take out my wallet and buy. Then I saw the book just an ordinary book it was what was printed on the cover that caught my attention. “Speaking book.” I was now very curious and picked up the book. The book was fairly old and had seen quite some service. In those days there was no electronic books like one can buy today.

Picking up the book I opened it at random to my surprise a voice started speaking. A soft voice, an educated voice I listened for a few minutes but there was too much noise from the other people at the boot sale. Holding the book in my hand I looked for the owner and asked him what he was charging for the book. “Two shillings,” he said somewhat hesitantly. Taking from my pocket a handful of small change I gave him a half a crown. Telling him that I wanted no change. Nothing else had caught my attention and I walked back to my house.

Indoors I sat myself down in my old armchair and made myself comfortable. I opened the book and now that I was in the quiet of my own home the well-modulated voice spoke again. I listened to a Fairy Tale being told as if to a small group of children. I now looked at the page there was no writing to be seen. In fact the whole book was free from printers ink. I looked at the book from all sides trying to find where the loudspeaker was situated. There was no loud speaker, no microphone, no moving parts at all. Where was the voice coming from? I closed the book the voice stopped talking. Opening the book the voice told another tale. No two tales were the same. No the book is not for sale in fact I keep it locked away in my safe. Having told you this story of my speaking book I have let you into my biggest secret. It is from this book that all of my Fairy Tales come. In fact I am dreading the day when and if the book stops telling me my Fairy Tales for then I will have nothing more to write about. My computer with the modem and the printer with scanner will be part of a boot sale. It will cost you more than a half crown to buy the book as for the computer and its accompanying parts I will give them to whoever buys the book. Bern
