The Electric Torch.
Elfiefee found an electric torch that someone had lost or thrown away in Fairyland. Elfiefee showed me her new find and asked me what the humans used it for. I showed her how to switch the torch on and off. Elfiefee smiled and said that is no light why a dozen glow worms would give off a much better light. I then explained about batteries that needed changing out and new batteries replaced than the torch would give off a powerful light. Taking one of the batteries from the torch I went into town and bought some new ones. Elfifee met me under the old oak tree and I replenished the batteries. Now the torch gave off a brilliant light even in daylight.
I thought no more about the torch and had nearly forgotten that if it was used too long it would need some more batteries. One day Elfifee met me with her torch and told me that the light was nearly gone and could I get some more batteries. I told her that batteries cost money and I did not know if I could keep getting her new batteries for her torch. “I need the new batteries for my business I escort Fairies and Pixies through Fairyland at night. Without the torch I would have to go back to working by day and this night escort service is very exciting I must have new batteries on a regular basis.”
Elfiefee then offered me some of her jewellery in exchange for the batteries. I knew that all Fairies have jewellery some of it very expensive but I could not take her jewellery and the batteries were not all that expensive. I decided to buy her four new batteries every week until she either gave up her escort service or the novelty wore off. I replaced the batteries on a regular basis and gave the matter no more thought until other Fairies came to me and wanted me to buy them new torches they too wanted to run an escort service the same as Elfiefee’s. I decided not to help, as one escort service was enough there were not so many Fairies and Pixies that wanted to roam Fairyland at night. I refused to buy and more torches for the other Fairies.
Now I was accused of helping Elfiefee run a business that had no reason to be in fairyland. Why everyone knew that with a wave of a magic wand a dozen or more glow worms could be had to provide light if it was needed and apart from that on bright moonlight nights no one needed a light as the Moon’s rays lit up all of the forest floor. I was not really bothered about not providing new torches and as for the batteries why now they were part of my weekly shopping. One day Her Majesty came to the old oak tree clearing and asked me about the escort service and my providing Elfiefee with batteries for her torch. My answer to Her Majesty was simple. I told her that I encouraged Elfiefee for her initiative but to have other Fairies running around with powerful torches would cause much talk among the Human population that use the Heath or fairyland at night. We did not want that. Her Majesty agreed with me and for the next six months I supplied Elfiefee with batteries and she to found other things to do and the escort service was just another memory. Runaway Fairies.
Talk is going around Fairyland that some of the Fairies have run away, They had been saying for some time that they was bored and wanted a little adventure. They have run off and no one knows where they have gone. No one is really worried, as they all have their magic wands with them, and can always get Fairy cakes and water is plentiful. A few weeks have gone by and there is no news of them at all. All are now wondering if they have found what they were looking for.
News has been received from the Fairies in France and many stories are going around in Fairyland as how they managed to get to France. It was too far to fly and their magic wands were not strong enough to send them all the way to France. I myself thought that they had flown to Dover and caught a Ferryboat across the English Channel. I had another thought perhaps they had boarded the train that goes from London under the English Channel on to Paris. One Fairy spread the rumour around that they had flown to London airport and caught a plane to France. Now new rumours spread around Fairyland and one is more fantastic than the other. It was when a rumour that the missing Fairies had been captured by a wicked wizard that I decided to have a talk with Her Majesty. It is one thing to run off in the search for adventure another to be imprisoned by a wicked wizard.
The day was sunny and warm as I walked to Her Majesties small thatched roof cottage with is lovely garden full of flowers. Knocking on the door of the cottage Her Majesty opened the front door and invited me in to her living room. After we were seated I told Her Majesty about the missing Fairies and the rumours going around Fairyland. Her Majesty smiled and told me that there was nothing to worry about the fairies were being accompanied by three invisible Leprechauns. No harm had come to them and they were now with the French Fairies brushing up on their knowledge of the French Language.
Thanking Her Majesty I walked around Fairyland telling the Fairies that I met that the missing Fairies were all well and were in France to learn more of the French Language. Soon many more Fairies wanted to go to France. Her Majesty decided that all of the Fairies would go to France and all would have the opportunity to learn the French Language. I too was invited and thanked Her Majesty for her kindness. Soon all of the Fairies and myself were holding hands. Her Majesty appeared and waved her magic wand a spray of golden sparks covered the fairies and myself and I felt the strange feeling of travelling by magic. We arrived at Fontainebleau near Paris where we were met by the missing Fairies and their French Fairy Hosts. At first the French Fairies were a little shy at being so near to a human being and kept their distance from me but as soon as I addressed them in their own language the ice was broken and we all had a two months holiday in France. Now all of the English Fairies speak French and we often speak to each other so as not to forget our French. Bern.
The Fairy Herald
Not so long ago the Fairies found a bundle of old newspapers on the heath. The newspapers they brought to show me and I must admit they were curious to know what the newspapers were for. I called a meeting in the clearance by the old oak tree. Many Fairies attended and I told them about special people called reporters that went around looking for the latest news to put into the newspapers. I explained about the editor that looked at each story to decide if it was good enough and interesting enough for the people that buy the newspapers to read. I explained about the large printing presses that turned out hundreds of thousands of newspapers that were delivered to the Newsagents shops to be sold to the public. This got the Fairies interested and they asked if they too could make a newspaper for Fairyland. I told them that, that was a good idea and they should choose among themselves as to who the Editor should be and also to choose the reporters that were to collect the news. I then went off to my home to prepare my lunch.
I did not expect the fairies to take to the idea and was surprised when three Fairies appeared in my kitchen. We have chosen an editor and six reporters how do we go about printing the newspapers? I told them that I would print out any newspapers on my computer and if there were any pictures to be shown with the news the best artists among the Fairies should draw and colour the pictures, that meant a few other Fairies would be involved. The day went quickly to an end and I gave the subject no more thought.
The next morning I had just finished eating my breakfast when the same Fairies appeared once again in my kitchen. This time they had small notebooks with them and I was asked to sit down to my computer and put a newspaper together. Looking at the notes that I was shown I had another surprise. I had enough material to really put a newspaper together. Switching on my computer I asked what the newspaper should be called. They thought about They it and one said, “What about calling it the Daily Herald.” All were agreed and I typed in big letters, The Daily Herald. Then story after story was shown to me. I spent the next couple of hours typing in the reports and scanning in with my scanner the pictures they had brought with them to emphasize the stories. One column was dedicated to the new births at the local Fairy Maternity Ward. Each newborn baby had been drawn and coloured with all the details of Mother, Father and time of birth with the new babies name. Pictures and reports of new flowers I scanned into the computer. Carefully I read though the New daily Herald I had forgotten one thing the day and the date of publishing. I quickly put this right and printed out about a hundred Newspapers. A small group of Fairies delivered the newspapers to each of the Fairies cottages. The birth of a Fairy Newspaper had gone without a hitch. Soon we had orders coming in from the Fairy University, from the Leprechauns and Trolls even the Pixies wanted Newspapers. Now I have taught the Fairies how to use the computer, the scanner and the printer. I am given one copy of the newspaper every day except Sundays. No printing is allowed on Sundays as it is also for the Fairies a day of rest.
